Non-musical Comedy
March 22 - April 20, 2024
by Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore
Produced by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals.
Jon Trachtman and Leslie Arthur are out of work musicians who room together in New York City. To save money, Jon has been filing tax returns listing the pair as married. The day of reckoning comes when the Internal Revenue Service informs the “couple” they’re going to be investigated. Leslie masquerades as a housewife, aided by Jon’s fiancée, Kate. Complicating matters further, Leslie and Kate are having an affair behind Jon’s back, Jon’s mother drops in unexpectedly to meet her son’s fiancée, and Leslie’s ex-girlfriend shows up demanding to know why Leslie has changed and won’t see her anymore. Like a cross between I Love Lucy and Some Like it Hot.
Our second show of the season, “Love, Sex, and the IRS,” was written very much like a 1970s sitcom by Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore. At the start of the seventies, rural fantasies like “Green Acres” and “The Beverly Hillbillies” were popular shows.
With the rise of writer/producer Norman Lear, TV was about to get real. Lear broke down cultural barriers, redefined taboos, and took on bigotry in shows like “All in the Family,” “Maude” and “Good Times.” However, by the late 70s, a comic invasion of shows like “Happy Days,” “Mork and Mindy,” “Laverne and Shirley” and “Three’s Company,” reigned supreme.
“Love, Sex, and the IRS” is a broad bawdy farce from the groovy 70s and, like these sitcoms, it doesn’t intend to change the world. However, these types of shows help us to connect, laugh and open our hearts. When our hearts are open the world is a much better place.
May today’s performance open your heart and help you to connect with others in this ever changing world.
