A Note from the Director...

Welcome to Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5, the Musical! This musical is based on the 1980 hit movie with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick. Originally a drama, 9 to 5 is based on stories Jane Fonda heard from women in the “Nine to Five” women’s office workers movement in Boston. Lillian Tomlin, who Jane had wanted to build a project with, convinced her that it should be a comedy. This created a hilarious story, set in the late 1970s, of friendship and revenge that’s comical, thought-provoking, and ahead of its time. With two of the three leads in place, Jane hand-picked Dolly Parton to star in her first ever film role. While filming, Dolly found she could use her long acrylic fingernails to simulate the sound of a typewriter. She wrote the title song on set by clicking her nails together and forming the beat. The song went to number one for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100!

The story centers around three female coworkers who have been pushed to their boiling point. Once provoked, they decided it’s time to teach their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss a thing or two about messing with the “little guy”. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee turn Consolidated Industries into a thriving work environment that helps employees feel appreciated and cared for.

Teamwork is the way we get shows up in ten days at MDT! This talented cast has been an absolute joy to work with. More than once I’ve said, “We got lucky…” We’ve been able to overcome many obstacles and play an advanced version of “Tetris” to fit this gigantic show on MDT’s stage. I cannot thank the cast and crew enough for collaborating with me to bring this relatable and jubilant musical to life! Your warmth and kindness have made all the difference. We are beyond happy that you are here and supporting live theater! We wouldn’t be here without YOU. Please spread the word so we can pack this house for every show. Now, sit back and prepare yourself to laugh, cry and cheer for this high-energy show!!
