Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein
Produced by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals.
The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother.
Welcome to Harmony at Myers Dinner Theatre's premier production of Cinderella!
There have been many versions and variations on this story. It can be dated back as far back as sometime between 7 BCE and 23 CE. The version that is now most widely known in the English-speaking world was first published in French by Charles Perrault in 1697, under the name Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufle de verre. The popularity of his tale was due to his additions to the story, including the pumpkin, the fairy- godmother and the introduction of "glass" slippers. Since then it has been retold again and again.
In the 1950s, Cinderella was not only re-imagined by Disney with their beloved animated feature, but on March 31, 1957, more than 100 million people tuned into their televisions to watch Rodgers & Hammerstein's musical adaptation which we bring to you today.
When we decided to start off the 2024 season with Cinderella, immediately I thought of her transformation for the ball. “How would we accomplish this?, Will it be difficult?, Will we please everyone?”. What I now realize is that “transformation” is synonymous with our season. Transformation is a change; a metamorphosis. Cinderella is the inauguration of a new theater company and owners. Change is difficult for many but in order for it to be successful you have to let go of fear.
When Perrault wrote his version of Cinderella, he said that the most important moral of the story is that no endowment can guarantee success and happiness, and that sometimes a godparent, a member of
society who has committed to care for someone outside his or her own family, needs to get involved. This moral is about community. Theater pulls a community together. We welcome you to transform with us and form a loving, strong and fearless community.
