In A Magical Kingdom Beneath The Sea, The Beautiful Young Mermaid, Ariel, Longs To Leave Her Ocean Home To Live In The World Above!
Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney's The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including "Under the Sea," "Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World." Ariel, King Triton's youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above by bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.
Wish I Could Be Part of Your World…
We have missed you so much! Prior to the last three months, it probably would have never even occurred to me how important The Little Mermaid’s message was. I’m old enough to have seen the cartoon in the movie theater, so I will admit that it hadn’t imprinted on me as much more than a bit of childhood nostalgia. However, if you take more than a cursory glance at the plot, you will find a wealth of themes and concepts that resonate greatly with the times we are living in…none greater than the power of acceptance. Ariel’s ascension to the human world and her subsequent love affair with a human forces Triton and his kingdom to begin breaking down prejudices that had been deeply embedded in their undersea culture. This rehearsal process has allowed us so many opportunities to explore these types of themes without fear of looking inward. That is truly the only way to affect change. Personal growth will always require us to work through our own hang-ups and discomfort in order to pave the way for a metamorphosis. I have done my best to retain the nostalgic moments we all know and love about the cartoon, while working hard to deepen the core values that are so important for us to hear. I’m blessed to have had such a marvelous cast and crew that weren’t afraid to take chances, and allow their imaginations to lead the way...particularly at a time when our society is allowing hate and fear to dictate our behavior. Thank you all for returning to our “Little Theatre That Could,” and I hope you will enjoy our little slice of Disney magic. Stay safe!
