Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.
A Pulitzer Prize winning comedy about the true power of friendship and how it affects us all!
A timeless American play, which inspired the beloved Academy Award-winning film starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman, Driving Miss Daisy tells the affecting story of the decades-long relationship between a stubborn Southern matriarch and her compassionate chauffeur. Their iconic tale of pride, changing times and the transformative power of friendship has warmed the hearts of millions and was the recipient of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for drama.
How you know the way I see, unless you lookin’ outta my eyes?
If they ever tell my story, let them say that I walked with giants. Let them say that I lived in the time of Alfred Uhry. I never imagined when I directed this show in 2005 that I would embark on a nearly fifteen year voyage, revisiting it through three subsequent productions. There are so many wonderful things to say about this script and plenty of evidence how it won the Pulitzer Prize. The power of friendship, the shattering of barriers and the humor…that may be (to this day) what shocks me the most about working on Driving Miss Daisy. It remains the only “straight play” I’ve seen to elicit the same response from an audience that a musical would. The text achieves near perfection as it weaves in and out of four decades utilizing both humor and drama equally. It is a rare play that can accomplish such a broad range of emotion. It has been an absolute joy to revisit this beautiful material with an entirely new group of Artists! Each Daisy cast I’ve had the pleasure to direct, have brought a unique perspective to these characters and I am grateful to them for helping me to grow as an artist and person. I would like to dedicate this production to Pat, Scott, Michael, Jane, David, Matt, Pam, Rory, Mary Anne, Ginny, Bradley and Jason. Thank you for walking this path with me, my life has been enriched by working with all of you!
