A Christmas Carol Musical Press Release

A Note from the Director...

Like many in my generation, I was introduced to A Christmas Carol by means of various cartoons of the 1970’s. Reruns of Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, The Flintstones, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, etc. As I got a little older, my family and I would gather together around the one television set we owned, to watch the classic 1938 movie version starring Reginald Owen. From the 1901 silent film called Scrooge, or, Marley’s Ghost to the present, more than two dozen films and countless stage adaptations have been seen by over a billion people. If there is one word to describe Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol it is, redemption. Scrooge’s transformation is a reminder to us all of the importance of joy, giving, and a thankful heart. As Dickens himself penned: “I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little Book, to raise the Ghost of an idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season or with me. Ay it haunt their houses pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it.”

Matthew C. Scott
